Brio Toys Wooden Train Set

The BrioToys Company, from Sweden, has been producing wooden trains and toys since 1958.  They offer a variety of wooden train sets and train tables to choose from.  Brio’s products are often more expensive than other brands, but because they sets are made with quality and durability in mind, they last and last, where other brands do not.

The Brio Toys train table can come with an entire set of trains, a play board that is two-sided, and with drawers in the table for storage of extra pieces not in use at the moment.  Kids absolutely love Brio Toys  train tables because the tables have so much to build with and onto for the future.

Brio WAGON AND FIGURE Passenger Car

Our kids played for hours at a time with their wooden trains from Brio Toys, on their train table.  From about the age of 2 ½ or so, they would build cities, stories and have fun moving about with the trains.  Our guys would use Playmobil props and people in scenes.  They also would incorporate Lego parts into one BIG BRIO TRAIN CITY extravaganza!

Kids of all ages enjoy playing with Brio trains, tables, and city accessories.  I can remember playing with the kids for the afternoon, not because I had to, but because it was so much FUN!  Try them – you won’t just like the Brio Toys wooden toy trains and sets – you will LOVE them!

Buying Brio Wooden Trains for Younger Children

Are you trying to find that perfect gift for your favorite toddler?  Then you will want to look at wooden train sets from Brio.  These wooden train sets teach important skills to younger children moving the trains on the tracks.  Although wooden train sets are available from several companies, Brio is one of the most reliable brands of quality, wooden toy train sets and accessories.

If you are buying a train set for a younger child, it is best to start with a small one and then with more maturity, add on with the more complex train sets.  There are many different prices of sets to choose from too.  Some of the larger, train sets and accessories will offer hours of great playing for the little older child and even some grownups!  Brio also sells wooden train tables with tough play boards on them.  The tables have lots of room to set up the “stage” for stories and plenty of storage room underneath for extra pieces, when not in use.

Our kids made up their own stories around the train sets and accessories and would play for many hours at a time.  They would even bring in Playmobil and Lego figures and parts to enhance their stories!

Brio Toys  wooden toy trains and accessories are heritage toys.  They may cost a bit more up front, but your grandchildren will pass these toys to their grandchildren to play with!

Brio Toys – Making History

The Brio company originally was a wooden basket making company in the small village of Osby, Sweden.  Toys came after the baskets.  The owner’s sons started working in the family business and it was their idea to make wooden trains and toys!

Even the name Brio has its beginnings from the little village, Osby.  “Br” in Brio is for the 3 brothers that turned the wooden basket making company into a wooden train and toy making company.  The  founders’ first name was Ivarsson, and that is what the “i” stands for,  “o” is for the village of Osby, Sweden.

In 1958 Brio toy trains became very popular and the trains were marketed worldwide.  The trains were non-motorized and connect to each other by a magnet.  They are extremely easy for kids to play with, connect and to control them on the tracks.

The tracks are made from sturdy wood and need only a flat surface to place them on.  Now, some of the trains run on batteries.  My kids would lay out track all over the living room floor and run Brio trains and build cities and train tracks all afternoon.  Childhood bliss……!

Brio Wooden Toys – Best Quality

Best Quality – Brio Wooden Toys

Brio was founded in 1908 by, Ivar Bengtsson, as a wooden basket company.  It was not until his 3 sons grew up and worked at the basket company that the toy market was envisioned and started.

Brio is known best for wooden train sets that last and last.  The toys and wooden train sets have been sold in Europe since 1958.  Many of the toys produced by Brio are non-mechanical toys that hook together simply with magnets.  Some of the wooden train sets that Brio sells, come with accessories, such as cityscape blocks, trees, bushes, and people.  My kids would make up whole stories around the trains and play for hours!  Now, there are battery powered and remote controlled engines too.

Brio toys and wooden train sets have a great reputation for quality.  Only the highest quality wood and paint is used for Brio toys.  This is why they may cost more, but they are worth it, as the wooden trains and toys stand up to the test of time.  Brio wooden trains and toys are heritage toys that will be passed down in a family from generation to generation.

Questions And Answers On Brio Toys

Daniel asks…

Brio Toys?

I just got my American Baby magazine, and inside was a wonderful wooden train set. The manufacturer is Brio Toys (www.brio.com). I went to their website and some other websites that carry Brio Toys. However, I am unable to find the train set in the magazine.

The train set is a wooden track that stores in a red, white, and blush plush horse. It has three little wooden horses as trains. There is also a red ramp with yellow accents and red and yellow end pieces for the track.

Can anyone help me locate a place to buy this set?

And, yes I’ve trie ebay.

briotoys answers:

You might check with Learning Curve or The Toy Chest. Both companies are connected with brio.

David asks…

I would like to build a toy train table, Brio type table?

For my sons wooden train set, would it be okay to use a piece of “OSB” type particle-board stuff, painted? It has a very strong glue smell, and I am wondering if it is okay to use this stuff inside. Is it harmful? Will the glue smell go away???? Has anyone built one of these? Thank you!!!

briotoys answers:

I typically use sheet plywood or a sheet of a slightly hard pine.

Particle board, it’s too crumble, and such for me. Go to a toy train / Hobby store they will let you know what you need exactly, if it’s an old enough store to still carry trains and such.

Then go to home depot and explain what you need.

Good luck.

Shelley asks…

Where is the best good inexpensive source for wooden train track compatible w/ Brio or Thomas the Tank Engine.

My kid is nuts about playing with his wooden track and creating new layouts to the degree that he is more interested in making new layouts than in actually playing with the trains themselves.

What are the best, least expensive sources for wooden toy train track compatible with Thomas the Tank Engine/Brio standard wooden Gauge?

Also, is there any place to get PDF files of plans using these standard track pieces as he enjoys trying to follow these too.

Are there any router or woodworking plans for making this stuff?

I know. More than one question. The happiness of a 3-year-old depends on your answers.

I know, not a typo. 3.

briotoys answers:

Costco has a set that they put out each fall…is about 100 bucks for the tracks, trains, buildings, and accessories. Toys R Us sells a knock off brand (Imaginarium) that is very cheap too…3 engines in a pack for about 10 bucks.

I’ve bought some pieces from e-bay & craig’s list that are in good shape too.

Kylee asks…

Grandmother buys baby age non-appropriate toys – what to do?

Hi, I have a 10 month old boy, still a wee baby of course. My problem is my mother buys him age non-appropriate toys and when I tell her about it, she says ‘Well, just save it for later’. She saw a good price and got him a hard plastic dump truck with sharp edges – so that’s in the closet for much later.

She got him teddy bears for an older child with ribbons and sewn in plastic/glass eyes, so those are being saved for later too.

For his birthday in 2 months, shes told me many times she wants to get him a BRIO train set. I told her I saw the recommended age of 3-7 yrs. on those sets. She said ‘well I want him to have it just in case I die, he’ll know it’s a big gift from grandma’…She’s not dying anytime soon: she always says things like this, so you know.

What do I do? I don’t want to clog up my closets and house with toys that are far off for him to use. And I don’t want to be mean about it. I’ve tried explaining it to her too. I’ve heard bad stories of kids using toys that are too old for them (Magnetix) and swallowing pieces..
thanks!

briotoys answers:

Live with the drain on space. I know it’s inconvenient but you can’t tell them not to buy stuff or what to buy. Let them do their thing. Just control when your child plays with these toys. I’ve got 3 under two right now and know how frustrating and irritating having yet another thing to find a place for and deal with but, they’re doing something nice for your child. Sometimes being quiet and dealing with it is the kindest best solution, especially when it comes to family.

Marie asks…

What’s the best toy to buy an intelligent two year old? ?

My son is very intelligent, he is very witty for his age- and far more clever linguistically and in other ways then of other kids his age. The problem is I don’t know what to buy that will stimulate him to further his intelligence- he loves brio and trains and bob the builder. Emn anyone have any good ideas?

briotoys answers:

V-Smile is a video game system for the younger set. You would then purchase games (cartridges) with different characters/games and it would be fun and he can learn at the same time. My 6 and 4 yr old have had it for 2 years and they love it.
